The Importance of Nutrition

Nutrition involves the bodies physiological and metabolic responses to food. We ingest nutrients in the form of food and drink. Nutrients are comprised of a number of chemical compounds including amino acids (the 'building blocks' of protein), and fatty acids (a constituent of fats), some of which are also naturally present in our body alongside vitamins and minerals. Following ingestion, food is metabolised and then the nutrients are absorbed and circulated throughout our bloodstream and delivered to our cells for utilisation or excretion. It is these nutrients that allow our bodies to function effectively at every stage of your life.

Your growth and development, energy levels, mental health and performance, sleep quality and quantity, exercise performance and recovery, likelihood and management of illness and disease, digestion, weight are all affected by your nutrient intake and absorption. Therefore, if either of these are inadequate, your body cannot function as efficiently. Research is continuing to show that even over the short-term, nutrition neglect will often lead to impaired bodily function, illness and  disease. With this in mind, is essential that you provide your body with the right foods to support efficient functioning of all body systems for optimal health.

Weight Loss Nutrition

For successful weight loss, diet and exercise are two major areas which must be addressed.

Whether it's 4kg or 40kg, we will provide you with the tools and support you need to lose weight in a safe and healthy manner. There are a lot of fad diets, weight loss pills and potions, and meal replacement shakes out there that promise to make you lose weight. To be honest, you will probably lose weight in the short-term using one or more of these methods but they are not at all healthy, nor are they sustainable. Diets often encourage an unhealthy relationship with food and unsociable eating habits, they are expensive, restrictive, and will often result in nutrient deficiencies over time, leading to additional health problems. The key to success is making small and steady changes that work with your lifestyle and food preferences. Successful weight loss wonít happen overnight and it does take hard work, but it is worth it! Alongside weight loss, you (and others around you) will benefit from a number of other changes such as:

an increase in energy levels
improved mental health and performance
improved quantity and quality of sleep
improved exercise performance and faster recovery
improvements in digestion
fewer aches and pains
a reduced likelihood and better management of illness and disease and a well deserved confidence boost!

Exercise and Sports Nutrition

Whether you are a recreational exerciser or an elite athlete, it is essential that you get your nutrition right.

Nutrition can have a major impact on many physiological aspects of exercise and will greatly affect your performance on the day, as well as recovery following an exercise session, game or competition. When it comes to athletes it doesn't matter how hard you're training, if your nutrition isn't up to scratch, it is highly unlikely you will be performing at your best. Important aspects to consider include:

hydration levels and fluid intake before, during, and after exercise the type of exercise undertaken, as well as  frequency, duration and intensity timing of exercise sessions

food and fluid intake throughout the day
specific fuel requirements
ideal body mass and composition for your sport
gastrointestinal problems
alcohol intake
heat acclimatization, humidity and altitude

As you can see, there is a lot to consider. Take the guess work out by consulting with our Nutritionist or BIA specialist
who can provide you with evidence-based nutritional strategies to optimise your exercise and sports performance. This will ensure that you get the most out of your training sessions and perform at your best come games or competition day.

What Happens in a Consultation

At My Remedy, our fully qualified Nutritionist, will go over an in-depth Diet and Lifestyle Questionnaire with you which will allow her to get as much information from you as possible regarding key aspects of your life. Key areas include:

occupation and shift times

body measurements

any medical issues

diet and dietary habits, and routines

energy levels

current exercise routine (or lack of?!)

Together we then use this information to assess key areas to work on and set appropriate goals.

In addition, a Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) test is also available, which is a fantastic way to see where you're at and keep you motivated to reach your goals so if this sounds like you we hold one day a month clinic sessions with Danielle; our specialist. You will be able to ask any questions you have regarding your personal nutrition or any nutrition topics but please note that while she we do our best to answer as many questions as possible during your Initial consultation, there is only so much that can be covered in the time available. Follow up consultations are therefore important to answer any on-going questions and to ensure you are staying on track to achieving your goals.

How do we do it?

Our nutritionists work alongside the naturopaths and practitioners at My Remedy and therefore tackles nutrition from a holistic approach, considering all areas of your life and not just your diet.

For an even better assessment of your health status and how this may be affecting your current dietary habits, nutrient metabolism, digestion, and absorption, you can add a quick 30 min hemaview test. Hemaview can identify a number of conditions affecting the blood that may be prevented and/or improved with a nutritious diet such as

nutritional deficiencies (inc. essential fatty acids)

anaemia (this may indicate iron, B12, or folic acid deficiencies)

poor immunity

inflammation

dehydration

food allergies

blood fat levels

oxygenation/free radical damage of your cells
